Mercedes Benz Partners With Matternet To Deliver Delivery!
Imagine a world where an all electric delivery van fitted with drones and robotic shelves pulls up to a neighborhood. The driver steps out to deliver a package that is too heavy for a drone to carry, but before the driver exits the vehicle he pushes a button and there is a jolt of excitement coming from the back of the van as packages are selected, sorted, attached to a drone which carries them to other homes in the local vicinity!
Sound like science fiction? Well, what if we told you it was science fact, or well on its way to be? Sounds pretty exciting. At Cedes Repair, we were a bit intrigued by the concept. Not that we are planning to shift gears and become a courier, but because we love all things Mercedes. That is the focus of our article today.
Mercedes-Benz has partnered with a startup company that specializes in drones to create a mobile distribution center. The “Vision Van” as it is being called servers as the mother-ship for the Matternet M2 Delivery drones. Each of these drones is capable of carrying weights up to around 4 and 1/2 pounds over distances of around 12 miles on a single charge. The drones are loaded with the aid of mechanical robotic systems in the rear of the van and are sent to local addresses within range of the landing vehicle.
‘With the Vision Van from Mercedes-Benz Vans we provide an idea of future generations of vans: the intelligent automation technology connects the entire process, from loading and transportation by road through to delivery to the consignee,’ said Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, in a statement.
‘This makes it easier for the deliverer to do business and rapidly reduces the delivery time for end customers.’
Unlike Amazon and Google, who have drones that travel to and from local warehouses, this mobile unit sets out to deliver in what may be a more practical and efficient way.
It is this kind of innovation that sets Mercedes apart from many of their competitors and a big reason why Cedes Repair loves sharing the exciting new things on the horizon we hope you have enjoyed this article as much as we have sharing it.
